MARION STAYS HOME

MARION STAYS HOME

A day after he said air travel had aggravated his back injury, Heat forward Shawn Marion did not accompany the team Tuesday on its four-game trip.

It is unclear whether Marion would rejoin the team later, but his absence Tuesday almost certainly rules him out Wednesday against New York and Thursday against Detroit. The Heat plays Sunday at Boston and Monday at Indiana.

Point guard Jason Williams did travel after having a magnetic resonance test on his sprained right thumb. Williams sat out Monday against the Bucks and was expected to miss a week.

Marion has missed the past four games, and six of eight, with recurring back spasms. An MRI on Marion's back Monday was negative, but the team is taking precautions with 12 games left.

''He's got pain. He's had spasms and we just wanted to check it out,'' Heat coach Pat Riley said after Monday's victory against the Bucks.

Marion hopes to play again before the end of the season. But he said he understands coaches don't want to risk further damage. The Heat would like to give more minutes to prospects called up from the NBA Development League on 10-day contracts, such as forwards Kasib Powell and Stephane Lasme.

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

Powell still shares a locker with fellow D-League call-up Blake Ahearn, but at least he has his own name on the back of his jersey.

That was a luxury Powell didn't have Saturday when he made his Heat debut at Charlotte while wearing a nameless No. 22 jersey. But he wore No. 12 with his name on the back Monday against Milwaukee.

''The first thing I do now when I get in is look at my jersey, turn it around and see if my name's on it,'' he said. ``You can't take anything for granted.''

WEDNESDAY: HEAT AT KNICKS

When: 7 p.m.

Where: Madison Square Garden, New York.

TV/radio: Sun Sports; WIOD (610), WQBA (1140 AM, Spanish).

The series: Knicks lead 51-32.

Garnett Named Eastern Conference Player of the Week

posted by deadguy321

BOSTON - Boston Celtics forward Kevin Garnett was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week for games played Monday March 17 through Sunday March 23, 2008.

Garnett helped the Celtics achieve a 3-1 week in which they defeated San Antonio, Houston and Dallas in three consecutive games on the road for the first time since February of 1987. Garnett averaged 20.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.0 block per game. Garnett also recorded three double-doubles during the week.

This is the 17th time in Garnett's career that he has been named the NBA's Player of the Week and the second honor for Garnett this season. His last honor came earlier this season for the week ending November 12, 2007 when he averaged 22.7 points, 15.3 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game during a 3-0 week against Denver, Atlanta and New Jersey.

ABOUT THE CELTICS

posted by deadguy321

The Celtics have dominated most of their Western foes this year, losing just five of their 28 games out of their conference. But the Phoenix Suns visit the Garden tonight having had similar success against the East (22-5 vs. East) and with a victory in hand over the Celtics.

The only time the Celtics (55-15) lost three straight games this season, the third defeat came at the hands of the Phoenix Suns (47-23). So the Celtics, losers of their last two games, are hoping this isn't becoming a trend.

MEET KOBE BRYANT

posted by deadpossum

Just as we promised, this is MEET KOBE BRYANT. Kobe Bryant is one of the quickest releasers in the league, though I don't really like him. I don't really like him because he is a ball hog. I mean, no, he doesn't have the greatest teammates ever, but he has some good ones such as Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom. If Bryant and Gasol work together, they can perform as well as Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. Also, Kobe is great in the clutch.

MEET SHAQUILE O'NEAL

posted by deadguy321

Today I will talk about Shaq and compare him with Stoudamire. A thing about them is they are both strong underneath the basket. So they will share the ball under the basket alot. Shaq is not good at foul shots but he makes it up with his power by being strong under the basket and getting rebounds. WE will talk about Kobe bryant.

MEET ALLEN IVERNSON

posted by deadpossum

Today, (as the first player I, or deadguy321 will talk about,) I will talk about Allen Ivernson. The quick little guy is my favorite player in the league. Many of you may think that he was traded back to the 76ers---No chance. He is still on the Denver Nuggets. With his speed, agility, and finess, he always seems to make onto the top 10 plays. He can shoot for three or drive. He always seems to get fouled. He is also my favorite player because: He has a style just like Kobe Bryant, but he passes, unlike Kobe-No Disrespect to the lakers because they are leading the West, but I just like how Ivernson plays, you never know what he is going to do. Be sure to look back for more MEETS OF PLAYERS. Our next MEET will be a
MEET WITH SHAQUILE O"NEAL.
